About Influenza
Every year thousands of folks in our community suffer from an upper respiratory infection known as influenza. The statistics are compelling as over 200,000 people require hospital care and over 37,000 people die from complications each year. It is important to understand that many of the hospitalized patients are younger than 40 and a high percentage are our children.
Influenza is a viral infection that affects the nose, throat, and lungs. Its symptoms include fever, shills, cough, sore throat, runny nose, headache, muscle aches and sinus problems. Influenza is contagious and spreads through virus-infected droplets that are coughed or sneezed into the air. The flu season typically occurs between November and April. There is a southern hemisphere cycle and a Northern hemisphere cycle, so if you are traveling abroad one should take the appropriate precautions.
The flu is caused by two types of virus- Influenza type A and Influenza type B. These viruses are responsible for seasonal flu each year. The flu virus evolves to different strains regularly and that is why annual vaccination is as important as these vaccines are changed each season to attempt to keep up with changes in the virus.
So please- request flu shot each year- We can bill insurance and usually there is no charge for the vaccine. Both stores offer walk in flu vaccination as well and other vaccination.
